Real estate professionals are often encouraged to compete by making stronger claims.

  • More experience.
  • More production.
  • More awards.
  • More market knowledge.
  • More luxury. More expertise.

Sometimes that is appropriate.

But other times, the better strategy is not to make a stronger claim inside the same contest.

It is to choose a different contest.

That matters because many agents are trying to win comparisons that do not actually help them. For example:

  • If one agent has higher production, another may try to answer with a different production number.
  • If one team claims luxury leadership, another may try to sound even more exclusive.
  • If one profile says, โ€œtop producer,โ€ another may reach for โ€œleading expert.โ€

The result can be a field of professionals making increasingly similar claims.

And once that happens, the reader is left comparing adjectives, rankings and numbers rather than understanding why one professional may be particularly suited to a specific need.

That is where positioning becomes more interesting.

Suppose an agent cannot credibly claim to be the largest producer in the market.

That does not automatically put the agent in a weak position.

Perhaps the stronger distinction is experience with inherited properties, relocation, first-time sellers, complicated transactions, a particular neighborhood, a certain property type or a client group that requires more explanation and guidance.

Now the comparison changes.

The agent is no longer trying to prove, โ€œI am bigger.โ€

The communication is helping the reader answer, โ€œIs this person particularly relevant to what I need?โ€

That is a much more useful question.

It is also why I think profiles and biographies should be built around defensible positioning rather than borrowed prestige language.

The goal is not to make every professional sound superior to everyone else.

The goal is to identify the circumstances in which that professional has a credible reason to belong in the conversation.

That may come from experience.

It may come from specialization.

It may come from geography, client type, transaction complexity, professional background or a particular way of working.

But whatever the basis, the positioning should give the reader something meaningful to recognize.

That is the larger point.

Positioning is not simply about climbing higher inside an existing hierarchy. It is about helping the right reader understand where your experience, judgment or specialization becomes especially relevant.

  • A weaker strategy says, โ€œChoose me because I am more impressive.โ€
  • A stronger one may say, โ€œChoose me because this is the kind of situation I understand.โ€

That is not avoiding competition.

It is refusing a comparison that does not serve either the professional or the client.

If your profile is competing mainly through generic prestige claims, comment ๐—ฃ๐—ข๐—ฆ๐—œ๐—ง๐—œ๐—ข๐—ก or DM me that word. Iโ€™ll show you where I would look for a more defensible point of difference.

And if you know an agent who is stronger in a particular lane than their current profile makes clear, share this with them.
